About Bernedoodles
What is a Bernedoodle?
These beautiful dogs are a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. These outstanding genetics produce a dog fully equipped with beauty, brains, personality and unmatched social skills. They are the perfect family dog.
Personality
Happy | Playful | Smart | Charming | Curious Friendly | Social | Enthusiastic | Cuddly | Loving
Bernedoodles are happiest when they are with you. Whether that is out on a hike or laying on the couch watching television, they love their humans very much. They are intelligent, goofy and playful like the poodle and are both sweet and fiercely loyal like the Bernese Mountain Dog.
Health
Crossing healthy purebred parents results in puppies that are healthier than either of their parents.
Hybrids like the Bernedoodle are only likely to inherit a health problem that is common to both the Poodle and the Bernese; two breeds that share few common genetic conditions. Bernedoodles therefore have what is referred to as “hybrid vigor”, and can be expected to live healthier, longer lives than their purebred parents (life expectancy 12-15 years). While they tend to be healthier than their parents, they can still be prone to conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia, skin problems, such as hot spots and allergies and like any other breed of dog, they may get cancer.
At Cowlitz Valley Bernedoodles, we breed first generation cross puppies, which results in a straight 50% Bernese, 50% Poodle cross. The F1 (first generation) cross is considered the healthiest, as the parents have the least likelihood of contributing genes for common inheritable diseases.
It is also important to note, that at Cowlitz Valley Bernedoodles, we perform DNA testing on all our dogs to ensure they are clear of genetic conditions specific to their breed. When purchasing a dog from us, a copy is available upon request.
Size
No two Bernedoodles are identical as the genes from the parents blend each time in a unique way which gives variation in size and color in this hybrid litter.
Although Bernedoodles come in 3 sizes, standard, mini and tiny, here at Cowlitz Valley Bernedoodles, we breed standard sized Bernedoodles. Our Bernese Mountain Dog is 85 pounds and our Standard Poodles are between 60 and 65 pounds. Adult Bernedoodles from our kennel typically weigh between 65 and 85 pounds.
Coat/Fur
Families all over the world appreciate their low to no shed coat, making them a fabulous addition to families of allergy sufferers. Every Bernedoodle has a different coat, the majority have a wavy coat that sheds minimally, if at all. It is rare to see a Bernedoodle with a straight coat. However, the straighter the coat, the more it sheds, and the less suitable the dog will be for people with allergies.
About the Bernese Mountain Dog
Bernese have a placid easygoing nature and are very loyal and dedicated to their families, love children and want nothing more than to be with their people. They were bred in the Swiss Alps as farm dogs that pulled carts or drove cattle to market. They have a double coat that sheds quite heavily. It is an intelligent strong dog that has a moderate need for exercise. They can be afflicted with hip and elbow dysplasia or succumb to inherited cancer. They are a shorter-lived dog with a life expectancy of just seven years. They are sensitive, can be stubborn, but also have a deep need to please their people.
About the Poodle
The Poodle ranks high on the canine intelligence scale, they are easy to train, goofy and fun and have a single layer coat of curly hair that is a low to non-shedding coat. The Standard poodles are hardy and enjoy outdoor adventures. They were originally bred as water retrievers in Germany.
